Welcome to the Alameda Civic Ballet's
Read below for an important notice.
Dear Alameda Civic Ballet Families,
Thank you so much for allowing your child to audition for our Nutcracker production this year. We are passionate about ACB's mission, and producing the Nutcracker every year for the past eleven years has enabled us to pursue that passion. Your support has been instrumental in this process and we truly thank you.
Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, we are heartbroken to report that we have to cancel our Nutcracker production this year. We understand how extremely disappointing this news is and want to provide you with an explanation.
As you may know, our Nutcracker production has taken place at Kofman Auditorium for the last eleven years. Kofman Auditorium is operated by Alameda Unified School District (AUSD), and we submitted a permit application to rent it in February, which was approved in April.
AUSD recently informed us, however, that there are issues with the operation of the auditorium, due to adjacent construction, that make it impossible for us to use for our production. Specifically, three weeks ago AUSD informed us that there would be no heat or restrooms in the auditorium effective immediately. We were stunned by the news, since AUSD had repeatedly provided us with assurances during the course of the year, and as late as June 30th, that our production could go forward as planned. As you can understand, the safety and comfort of our dancers and patrons are paramount, and unfortunately AUSD has been unable to guarantee that those concerns could be met. Please note that we did not report the news earlier as we remained hopeful that our production could still go forward as planned or even as a reduced production at an alternate venue.
Since learning the news, we have met with AUSD staff, and attempted to come up with various and creative solutions to the issues. Despite our best efforts, we have been unable to confirm that we would be able to put on the production in a safe and habitable environment, and we have lost confidence that AUSD can accurately project the status of the auditorium in December.
We want you to know that we are as disappointed in this turn of events as you are, if not more, and we have already started planning towards creating an excellent Nutcracker production in 2017.
With respect to the fees you paid for your child to participate in the audition, please understand that we did incur costs to hold the auditions. Fees above those costs, if any, will be put toward Nutcracker 2017.
